Muncie, Indiana — Landmark Columbus Foundation announces its acclaimed exhibition American Modern: Architecture, Community, Columbus, Indiana has been installed at Ball State University’s Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning (CAP) Gallery. This move marks a significant step in fostering engagement with future designers, planners, and architects while continuing to celebrate the city’s legacy of modernist design and innovation.

First on view at the Columbus Area Visitor Center, the American Modernexhibition features twelve large-scale photographs by internationally acclaimed photographer Iwan Baan alongside design work by Studio Lin, both of whom were a part of the nearly 500-page publication released in the summer of 2024. The book was published by The Monacelli Press and written by notable author and Columbus native Matt Shaw. Through these newly commissioned images, the exhibition offers a compelling look at Columbus’ modernist design heritage, highlighting its role as a premier center for design excellence in the United States.

“We are thrilled to bring this exhibition to Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning,” said Richard McCoy, Executive Director of Landmark Columbus Foundation. “CAP is home to some of the nation’s most innovative architectural and urban planning programs, and we believe that engaging with the next generation of design thinkers will further the impact of American Modern in shaping conversations about architecture and community.”

Ball State University’s Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning has long been a leader in design education, providing students with immersive learning experiences that connect theory with real-world application. By hosting American Modern, CAP reinforces its commitment to fostering dialogue on architecture’s role in community identity, preservation, and innovation. The images and narratives presented in American Modern provide a deep understanding of how civic, industrial, and social forces have contributed to Columbus’ status as an architectural laboratory.

The exhibition at CAP continues Landmark Columbus Foundation’s mission to care for, celebrate, and advance the cultural heritage of Columbus, Indiana, and like-minded communities. The organization is well known for producing Exhibit Columbus, a globally celebrated program in its fifth cycle that explores the intersections of community, architecture, art, and design within the city’s unique urban fabric.
