Communications Officer/Operations Coordinator

Landmark Columbus Foundation is a 501(c)(3)nonprofit organization with the mission to care for, celebrate, and advance the cultural heritage of Columbus, Indiana. We have a dedicated board of directors, staff, and team that frequently partners with local and international organizations, schools, and individuals to fulfill its mission. We do this with three program arms:

Landmark Columbus is a Progressive Preservation effort that assists in caring for buildings, landscapes, and art in Bartholomew County. It serves to educate and advocate for these cultural resources through research, conservation, and fundraising.

Exhibit Columbus is an exploration of architecture, art, design, and community that activates the design legacy of Columbus, Indiana. It creates a cycle of programming that uses this context to convene conversations around innovative ideas and commissions site-responsive installations in a free, public exhibition.

Columbus Design Institute is a technical service initiative that promotes the Value of Good Design that built Columbus. It collaborates with partners through its design process to encourage meaningful investments in the sustainable and equitable development of communities.

Job Summary

Landmark Columbus Foundation is looking for an excellent communications officer/operations coordinator to join a fast-moving team engaged in projects and events that have significant impact in our community, and are regionally and nationally relevant. We are in need of someone who has the dynamic skills that can embody the voice of the organization — from being able to speak with national media, to writing a fun and smart Tweet, to shaping an engaging newsletter. This position will have tasks that evolve through the year, working in close connection to the Exhibit Columbus program. Applicants should be excited to know about the range of work completed by the organization and able to communicate, coordinate, and align operations across all three programs.

The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of success in the communications sector, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a history of coordinating projects and events. A candidate should have a strong interest in growing connections in the Columbus community. Preference will be given to those with experience in digital marketing/communications and project management. 


Responsibilities and Duties

The communications officer/operations coordinator is responsible for the planning, and implementation of Landmark Columbus Foundations’ communications, marketing campaigns, media relations, and initiatives. At the same time this position will be responsible for the coordination of projects and events undertaken by the organization. The communications/operations coordinator will work within a collaborative team structure and report to the executive director. Working closely with other staff and team members the duties could include the supervision of subcontractors, volunteers, and interns. This position is a full time, year round exempt employee.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all communications. 

  • Manage internal and/or external communications such as press releases, newsletters, website, social media, and special projects (i.e. video, presentations); consult with leadership to establish brand communication strategies and ensure communication, planning, and monitoring effectively meets goals and objectives.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain social media strategy for Landmark Columbus Foundation and its programs that are smart, accessible, and fun.

  • Work closely with the community to field inquiries, collect feedback, and identify areas of opportunity.

  • Coordinate projects and events with multiple civic, private, and community partners.

  • Coordinate communications strategies with external public affairs experts. 

  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, writers, and media outlets to advance the mission of Landmark Columbus Foundation. 

  • Act as a community liaison on behalf of the Landmark Columbus Foundation.

  • Create and assess metrics to gauge and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of communications projects and prepare summary reports.

  • Support special projects as necessary.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Hold at least a Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field—or equivalent experience. 

  • A minimum of two years experience in communications strategy development and implementation.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Knowledge of digital marketing tactics, such as email marketing, social media metrics, and SEO.

  • Excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to exercise good judgment and solve problems quickly and effectively.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital media, such as images and graphic design files. 

  • Demonstrated experience with managing multiple priorities.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and be self motivated, enthusiastic, and driven to better our community.

  • Familiarity with downtown Columbus.
