Exhibit Columbus announces OverUnder as 2022–23 Communication Designer in advance of the upcoming Symposium, Public by Design

With the selection of OverUnder, Exhibit Columbus rounds out the world-class roster of designers and thinkers participating in this cycle. Principal Chris Grimley to lead the studio's involvement in this cycle of Exhibit Columbus and speak at the Symposium.

Columbus, Indiana — Exhibit Columbus announces OverUnder as the Ccommunication Designer for the 2022–23 cycle of Exhibit Columbus, which is set to explore the theme, Public by Design, beginning with the 2022 Symposium taking place this Friday and Saturday. OverUnder is a Boston-based, interdisciplinary practice with expertise in architecture, urban design, graphic design, curation, and publications. The firm specializes in helping civic, cultural, and academic clients achieve sophisticated and distinctive designs with lasting impact.

The Curatorial Team will work closely with Chris Grimley, OverUnder Principal, to create the graphic expression that will begin now and evolve through the complete cycle of Exhibit Columbus. Grimley has organized, designed, and implemented experiential environments, interiors, master plans, and branding initiatives for clients ranging from small offices to large institutions. He is the project director for the office’s graphic design work with institutional and cultural clients such as Harvard University, MASS MoCA, MIT, and Vassar College’s Farm and Ecological Preserve. His work with Exhibit Columbus will culminate with a wayfinding system for the 2023 Exhibition, including a map and kiosk for each installation.

Exhibit Columbus today released an initial visual representation of the theme, which builds off of and connects to Rick Valicenti’s design work for the Exhibit Columbus program. Valicenti was the communication designer for the first two cycles of Exhibit Columbus; the designer for the third cycle was Some All None. Grimley and Valicenti will be a feature part of day two of the 2022 Exhibit Columbus Symposium, Public by Design. They will be in conversation together on Saturday afternoon, October 22 at City Hall as part of a day-long series featuring a keynote conversation with the executive directors of the Chicago Architecture Biennial (Rachel Kaplan-David) and Desert X (Jenny Gil Schmitz), two sessions introducing the seven teams of University Design Research Fellows, and an introduction to the High School Design Team, High School Design Team Alumni Group, and Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation's elementary Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program.

“OverUnder is an exceptional addition to this cycle of Exhibit Columbus,” said the six Curatorial Partners, Paola Aguirre, Urban Designer, BORDERLESS, Chris Merritt, Landscape Architect, Merritt Chase, Lauren M. Pacheco, Civic and Cultural Artist, Steel Studio Foundation, Bryony Roberts, Designer, Writer, Educator, Bryony Roberts Studio, Raymund Ryan, Curator at Large, The Heinz Architectural Center at Carnegie Museum of Art, and Holly Warren, Assistant Director for the Arts, City of Bloomington. “We are so thrilled to work with Chris, who has a great depth of experience working through concepts of environmental communication that result in unique and engaging expressions and experiences.”

Like the other participants in this cycle, Grimley’s work will evolve through his visit to Columbus, interactions with the community, and connections with the other participants in this cycle. Exhibit Columbus previously announced the four J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize Recipients and the seven teams of University Design Research Fellows. For the 2023 Exhibition, there will also be installations created by the High School Design Team and students in the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation's elementary Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program.

After the Symposium this month, all of the participants will present concepts at the Design Presentations, 24–25 February 2023, and the fourth exhibition will open 25–27 August 2023 throughout downtown Columbus.
